The menu bar

How SeroBooks' QuickBooks-style menus open, what each menu holds, the Alt keys, and why some items are not shown to you.

Everything in SeroBooks can be reached from the menu bar at the top of the window. The menus follow QuickBooks Desktop: the same menus, in the same order, with the same item names, so a form is where a QuickBooks user expects to find it. The Home Page's icons and the keyboard shortcuts are quicker ways to the same places.

Inventory, Forecast and Amazon are SeroBooks additions that QuickBooks Desktop does not have. They are drawn in lighter text, separated from QuickBooks' own menus by thin lines, and they sit between Reports and Window.

Opening a menu

  • Point at it. Rest the pointer on a menu's name and it opens after a moment. While one menu is open, moving the pointer across to another opens that one at once.
  • Click it. Clicking a menu's name opens it; clicking it again closes it.
  • Press Alt with its underlined letter. Each menu name has one letter underlined; Alt with that letter opens the menu. For example Alt+C opens Company and Alt+U opens Customers.

A menu closes when you choose an item, press Esc, or move the pointer away from it for a moment.

What you see inside a menu

  • Items. Click one to open it. A screen with a window of its own (Create Invoices, Enter Bills, the Customer Centre, the lists) opens in that window. Every other page and form (Bill Tracker, Preferences, Make General Journal Entries, Write Cheques, a report from the Reports menu) opens over the Home Page, as in QuickBooks, and Esc takes you back to the Home Page (see Escape, Back and closing forms). A command (Sign Out, Close All) happens at once.
  • Submenus, marked with an arrow, such as Lists ▸ Customer & Vendor Profile Lists or Reports ▸ Company & Financial. Point at one to open it.
  • Headings in small grey capitals, such as TRANSACTIONS in the Customers, Vendors and Banking menus. The items under a heading open the lists of that kind of transaction (Invoices, Estimates, Bills, Cheques and so on) rather than a new form.
  • Keys shown at the right of an item, such as Ctrl I beside Create Invoices or Ctrl K beside Go To / Look Up.
  • Ticks beside a setting that is on: View ▸ One Window or Multiple Windows, View ▸ Extend Across All Monitors, and the window in front in the Window menu's list.
  • Dividers grouping related items.

Why some items are not shown

The menus show only what you can use. An item is left out when:

  • your role does not allow you to see that screen (ask your administrator; see Roles and permissions explained);
  • your plan does not include it;
  • it does not apply to your business (the Amazon menu for a business that does not sell on Amazon, the Window arrangement items while you are in One Window view, Extend Across All Monitors on a computer that cannot span monitors).

A whole menu disappears when nothing in it is left to show. If you expected an item and cannot see it, see Permissions: "you do not have access".

Some screens your role can see but not use are shown, and ask for approval when you open them: somebody who holds the permission types their login ID and password to allow that one action.

The same screen in two menus

A few screens are reached from more than one menu, as in QuickBooks: Chart of Accounts is under both Lists and Company; Price Level List under Lists and Customers; Company Snapshot under Company and Reports; Transaction History and Transaction Journal under Edit and Reports. Each opens the same screen.
