Payroll

Payroll for every province and territory — in the same ledger as your books.

Most accounting software hands payroll to a second product and a second bill. SeroBooks runs it where the money already is: gross to net for Canada and the United States, holidays, vacation and overtime under each jurisdiction's own statute, and year-end filings built from the pay you actually ran.

Employment standards aren't national. Neither is this.

Holidays, vacation pay and overtime are provincial law, and they differ in ways that change a paycheque. Each jurisdiction below is loaded from its own statute — not copied from Ontario and hoped for.

Everything a pay needs

From the clock-in to the T4.

Gross to net, to the cent

CPP and CPP2, EI, federal and provincial tax under the CRA's T4127 formulas — reconciled to the CRA's own payroll calculator across all fourteen federal and provincial jurisdictions, Québec included.

Vacation pay by years of service

Each province's bracket table, accrued in a movements ledger; an override can raise an employee's entitlement but never lower it below the statute.

Statutory holidays, 13 calendars

Each jurisdiction's holidays and its own holiday-pay formula, with premiums for a holiday worked.

Overtime the way each statute writes it

Ontario weekly 44, Alberta 8/44 whichever is greater, BC daily two-tier plus weekly 40 — and banked time off where the province permits it.

Timesheets from the clock

Clock-ins become timesheets with meal-break and rounding rules beside the hours they produced; an unresolved punch holds that employee, not the whole run.

Benefits, deductions, garnishments

RRSP, union dues, taxable benefits and garnishments with CRA-correct cash and non-cash treatment, a priority order, and a shortfall register.

Bonuses and off-cycle runs

Bonus tax by the CRA difference method; off-cycle runs without the basic exemption.

Reverse, don't edit

A posted run is corrected by reversal and a revised run — nothing is edited or deleted, and a period can never be paid twice.

PIER review in February

Find CPP and EI deficiencies before the CRA's PIER report does — including CPP start and stop by date of birth.

Remittances and levies

All four CRA remitter schedules with accelerated deadlines and holiday roll-forward; WCB per-employee ceilings for every board and employer health tax where it applies.

Pay stubs, cheques, payment runs

Statements of earnings with year-to-date as at that pay and a masked SIN; cheques with the amount in words a bank honours; reprint after a jam.

Posts to the ledger exactly once

Five payroll posting roles mapped in one tap; a pay run reaches the general ledger once and refuses to land twice.

Year-end and filing

Files that validate before they leave.

Every electronic return is checked against the government's own schema first. Where a filing isn't built yet, the table says so.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan includes payroll?

Payroll is part of SeroBooks Pro — $300 a month or $3,000 a year (USD), for 6 users. Employees who only get paid do not need a login and do not use a seat.

Does it handle Québec properly?

Québec runs as its own regime: QPP and QPP2 instead of CPP, QPIP, the reduced EI rate, the Québec abatement, and RL-1 slips alongside T4s. The one thing not built is RL-1 electronic transmission, because Revenu Québec only publishes that specification to registered partners.

Can I pay by direct deposit?

Pay runs produce cheques and payment runs today. The Canadian Payments Association 005 bank file for direct deposit is not built yet, and the software refuses to guess at one.

What happens when the CRA publishes new rates?

Tax years are loaded as data, not code. A new year is an insert, and last year still recalculates exactly the way it was paid.

American employees?

Federal withholding under IRS Publication 15-T (including the multiple-jobs schedules), Social Security, Medicare and Additional Medicare, FUTA and SUTA, state withholding, and W-2s with an EFW2 file. American books and Canadian books are separate businesses and cannot be mixed.

Can my accountant run payroll for me?

Yes. Payroll screens are permissions like everything else, so an accountant with the right role can prepare, approve and post runs.
