GST/HST calculator

Pick the province, enter the amount, read the tax. Rates for all 13 provinces and territories, including Nova Scotia's 2025 reduction to 14%.

HST (13%)$13.00
Total tax$13.00
Total with tax$113.00

Standard rates for general goods; category exceptions (groceries, children's clothing, liquor…) differ by province. Rates as published — verify before filing.

How the calculation works

Adding tax to a pre-tax figure is multiplication: $100 at 13% HST becomes $100 × 1.13 = $113. Extracting tax from a tax-included figure is division, and this is where people slip — $113 including 13% is $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 of base and $13 of tax. Subtracting 13% of $113 gives $98.31, which is wrong by $1.69.

In combined-rate provinces the total splits into components for your books: a 12% BC total is 5% federal and 7% provincial, owed to two different governments and recorded in two separate payable accounts.

What you actually remit

Tax collected is not tax owed. You remit what you collected minus the input tax credits on your own business purchases — collect $10,000, pay $3,000 on inputs, remit $7,000. Businesses that record purchases carelessly remit more than they owe.

The rate to charge follows place of supply, meaning the customer's province rather than yours, which is why one business can correctly charge several different rates in a single week.

Frequently asked questions

Which rate applies to my sale?

Generally the destination's: ship to Ontario, charge Ontario's 13% HST. See the place-of-supply guide for the rules.

Are these rates current?

Rates are maintained with the Canada Tax Centre and dated there. Verify before filing — rates are law, and law changes.
