This article walks down the SeroBooks window from top to bottom and names every part of it. Once you know the parts, the rest of this Knowledgebase will make sense when it says "click Clear in the top bar" or "the window strip at the bottom".
From top to bottom, the SeroBooks window has:
- The title row with the menu bar.
- The dark top bar.
- The work area, with the Home Page underneath and your windows over it.
- The window strip.
- The status bar.
1. The title row and menu bar
On Windows, SeroBooks draws its own title row across the very top of the window.
- The menus — File, Edit, View, Lists, Favorites, Company, Customers, Vendors, Employees, Banking, Reports, then any extra menus your business uses (Inventory, Forecast, Amazon), then Window and Help. Point at a menu's name to open it, or click it. See The menu bar.
- The empty space to the right of the menus is the window's title bar: drag it to move the SeroBooks window, and double-click it to maximise the window or restore it.
- Minimise, maximise and close buttons at the far right, as on any Windows program. Closing the window closes SeroBooks; you stay signed in.
If your role can open only one area of SeroBooks, there is no menu bar: the screens of that area are shown as tabs instead.
2. The dark top bar
Under the menus is a dark bar that stays the same on every screen.
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| ☰ (Menu) at the far left | Opens the left navigation panel: printers, Admin, the Knowledgebase, Switch Company, Check for Updates, Settings, Logout and more. |
| SeroBooks logo | Just the logo. |
| Search (magnifying glass) | Opens Go To / Look Up, the same as Ctrl+K. See Go To / Look Up. |
| Location | Which location Inventory, Reports and the Dashboard show. A business with one location sees its name as a plain label. A business with several can choose one location or All locations. Reports that can be split by location show this choice beside their other filters. |
| Update to *version* (only when a new version is out) | Installs the new version. Red Update required when the update must not wait. See Install SeroBooks and keep it up to date. |
| Online | Shows that SeroBooks is connected. |
| Clear | Empties the form in front and starts a fresh one of the same kind, for when you want to throw away what you have typed and start again. Only the form in front is emptied; other open forms keep what was typed in them. SeroBooks confirms with "Cleared — new … ready." |
| Chat | Opens Team Chat. Shows a count of unread messages. Appears only when chat is switched on for you. |
| Maya | Opens Maya, the assistant who answers questions about your books. |
| Help (?) | Opens help for the screen in front, the same as F1. |
An accountant working in a client's books also sees a coloured banner above this bar: "You are working in client's books. Everything you save belongs to them." See My Accountant.
3. The work area and your windows
The large area in the middle is where your work happens.
- The Home Page sits at the bottom of everything. SeroBooks opens on it when you sign in, and it comes back whenever the last window closes. See The Home Page.
- Windows. Every form, list and report you open appears in a window of its own over the Home Page, with a title bar, and minimise, maximise and close buttons. You can move and resize windows, and have several open at once. See Windows: One Window, Multiple Windows and arranging them.
- Look-up windows opened with a shortcut (a customer's ledger with Ctrl+J, the Chart of Accounts with Ctrl+A) open over the form you are working on. Their title bar says "Esc to close — what you were doing is still there."
Text on any screen can be selected with the mouse and copied with Ctrl+C: an invoice number, an amount, an address.
4. The window strip
A strip along the bottom of the work area lists every open window, like the Windows taskbar.
- The label Windows · Ctrl+Tab at the left reminds you that Ctrl+Tab moves to the next window and Ctrl+Shift+Tab to the previous one.
- One tab per window. Click a tab to bring its window to the front. Click the tab of the window already in front to minimise it. Minimised windows show in italics; click to bring one back. Hover over a tab to read its full name. The small cross closes that window (asking first if it has unsaved changes).
- Multiple windows / One window switches between a window per page and one page at a time.
- Close all closes every window and returns you to the Home Page.
5. The status bar
The thin dark bar at the very bottom lists the keys that work everywhere:
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+K | Go to / Look up |
| Ctrl+I | Create Invoices |
| Ctrl+W | Write Cheques |
| Ctrl+J | A customer's ledger and balance |
| Ctrl+A | Chart of Accounts |
| Ctrl+R | Use Register |
| Ctrl+N | New |
| Alt+S | Save |
| Ctrl+P | |
| Esc | Back |
| F5 | Refresh |
| F1 | Help |
| ↑ ↓ | Move through a list |
| Enter | Open the highlighted row |
| Ctrl++ / Ctrl+− | Zoom the whole window in or out (Ctrl+0 returns to 100%) |
The full list is in Keyboard shortcuts.
Making things bigger or smaller
Ctrl++ and Ctrl+− zoom everything in SeroBooks, the way a web browser zooms a page: zooming out fits more rows of a list on the screen, and zooming in makes everything larger on a high-resolution monitor. Ctrl+0 goes back to normal size.
