Go To / Look Up is a search box that reaches two kinds of thing:
- Look-ups — answers you often need in the middle of something else: what a customer owes, what a vendor is owed, which bills are due, the chart of accounts, the trial balance, an item's stock and price. Each opens in a window over what you are doing, so a half-written invoice is still there, untouched, when you close it.
- Go to — the main areas of SeroBooks (Dashboard, Sales, Purchases, Inventory, Payments, Contacts, Reports, Accounting and so on).
Every look-up also has its own keyboard shortcut, so a key you do not remember is always one search away.
Opening it
- Press Ctrl+K.
- Choose Edit ▸ Go To / Look Up….
- Click the magnifying glass in the dark top bar.
Using it
- Start typing in Go to a module, or look something up…. The list narrows as you type. Every word you type must match the look-up's name, its description or one of its keywords, so
owefinds the customer and vendor ledgers andstockfinds Item lookup. - Click a result, or press Enter to take the first one.
- Press Esc to close the box without choosing anything.
Results are in two groups:
- LOOK UP — OPENS OVER WHAT YOU ARE DOING, each with its shortcut at the right.
- GO TO, each area with its Ctrl+number at the right.
Only look-ups and areas your role can open are listed.
The look-ups
| Look-up | Key | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Create Invoices | Ctrl+I | Opens a new invoice. |
| Write Cheques | Ctrl+W | Opens Write Cheques. |
| Use Register | Ctrl+R | An account with its running balance. |
| Memorized Transaction List | Ctrl+T | Transactions that repeat. |
| Customer ledger & balance | Ctrl+J | What a customer owes, and every invoice and payment behind it. SeroBooks first asks which customer, starting with the customer on the invoice you are writing. |
| Supplier ledger & balance | Ctrl+Shift+J | What you owe a vendor, and the bills and payments behind it. |
| Money to collect | Ctrl+B | Every customer balance by when it is due (the Money to Collect by Due Date report). |
| Bills to pay | Ctrl+Shift+B | Every vendor bill by when it is due (the Bills to Pay by Due Date report). |
| Chart of accounts | Ctrl+A | Every account and its balance. |
| General ledger | Ctrl+G | Every entry, account by account. |
| Journal | Ctrl+Shift+G | Every journal entry, with its lines. |
| Trial balance | Ctrl+Shift+T | Debits and credits, account by account. |
| Profit & loss | Ctrl+Shift+E | Income less expenses. |
| Item lookup | Ctrl+Shift+I | Stock on hand, price and history for any item. Type a name, SKU or barcode; Enter opens the first match. |
| Today's takings | Ctrl+Shift+D | What came in today, by payment method. |
Ctrl+A opens the chart of accounts only when the cursor is not in a text box; in a text box it still selects all the text. Ctrl+Shift+A opens the chart of accounts from anywhere.
How look-up windows behave
- A look-up opens in a movable window titled with its name, with the reminder "Esc to close — what you were doing is still there."
- Pressing the same key again while the window is open brings it to the front rather than opening another.
- While a look-up window is in front, keys that act on a document (save, print, new) do not reach the form behind it, so you cannot save or print the invoice underneath by mistake. Click the form to give the keyboard back to it.
- Clicking a line in a look-up that opens a document (an invoice in a customer's ledger, for example) opens it in its own window and moves the look-up out of the way.
- Press Esc to close the look-up.
Go to
Choosing an area opens its first screen:
| Area | Opens |
|---|---|
| Dashboard | The Dashboard |
| Sales | The Invoices list |
| Purchases | The Bills list |
| Inventory | The Item List |
| Transfers | Inventory Transfers |
| Payments | Customer Balances |
| Contacts | The Customer Centre |
| Reports | The Report Centre |
| Accounting | The Chart of Accounts |
Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9 open the areas in the order they are listed, skipping any your role cannot see; the list shows each one's number. For most roles Ctrl+1 is the Dashboard.
