Troubleshooting & FAQ · Frequently asked questions

Signing in and companies

Answers to common questions about signing in, passwords, staff usernames, expired subscriptions, syncing and switching between companies.

Answers to the questions people ask most about getting into SeroBooks and moving between companies. For the full walkthroughs, see Sign in and Open Company and working with several companies.

Signing in

"Login failed: cannot connect to server. Check internet connection."

SeroBooks could not reach the SeroBooks server. SeroBooks needs an internet connection to sign in and to read and save your books.

  1. Check that other websites open on this computer.
  2. If you are on an office network with a firewall or proxy, ask whoever looks after it to allow SeroBooks through.
  3. Try again. If it keeps happening while the internet works, email support@seropos.app.

"Login failed:" followed by another reason

The server refused the sign-in. Usually the username or password is wrong.

  • Passwords are case-sensitive. Check Caps Lock.
  • Click the eye in the Password field to see what you typed.
  • Staff: make sure the whole username is there, including the @business part. See the next question.
  • Owners: use Forgot Password? on the sign-in screen.

What is my username? What does name@business mean?

The owner of the company signs in with the email address the subscription was set up with. Staff usually sign in with a username of the form name@business, for example anna@northstar. The part after the @ belongs to your company, so two companies can each have an "anna". Your administrator gives you your username. See Staff sign-in names.

On a shared computer, after one person signs in with a name@business login the next person is offered the same @business as a chip beside the username field and only needs to type their name. If you belong to a different business, click the chip's cross and type your full username.

I forgot my password

  • Owner (email login): click Forgot Password? on the sign-in screen, type your email address and click Send Reset Link, then follow the email.
  • Staff (name@business login): ask your administrator to set a new password for you under Company ▸ Set Up Users and Roles. See Set Up Users and Roles.

A "Verify your email" window appears

The owner's email address has not been confirmed. SeroBooks has sent a verification link to it. Open the email, click the link, then sign in again. Resend email sends another link; check your junk folder if it does not arrive.

"Subscription expired"

The company's subscription has lapsed, so SeroBooks did not finish signing in. Click Renew on serobooks.app, renew there, and sign in again. Nothing in your books is lost while a subscription is lapsed. See Your subscription and plan.

It says "Syncing Data…" for a long time

On the first sign-in on a computer, SeroBooks downloads all your company's lists, which can take a few minutes for a large company or a slow connection. Later sign-ins fetch only what has changed. If a step takes too long, SeroBooks carries on without it rather than waiting for ever.

"Data sync did not finish"

Part of your lists could not be downloaded; the message names which parts. Click Continue anyway to work. SeroBooks keeps downloading the missing part in the background and retries on its own until the list is complete; the top bar shows its progress. You can also open the left navigation panel and click Sync DataBase. See Where your data lives and how it syncs.

A customer is missing on one computer but not on another

That computer's copy of your customer list is short. Open Customers ▸ Customer Centre and click Refresh: SeroBooks reads every customer from the cloud again and adds anyone missing (for vendors, do the same in the Vendor Centre; for items, on the Item List). The number beside the heading, for example 1,890 on file, should then match the other computer.

SeroBooks also checks this by itself when the company opens and every ten minutes, and downloads whatever is missing in the background. While it does, the top bar shows Downloading customers & vendors with how many have arrived, and the customer lists and search boxes show Still downloading. Signing out and in again, or switching company and back, does not by itself fix a short list; Refresh does. See Where your data lives and how it syncs.

SeroBooks opened straight into the company without asking me to sign in

That is normal: SeroBooks stays signed in until you sign out. On a shared computer, sign out when you finish with File ▸ Sign Out.

How do I sign out?

File ▸ Sign Out, or Logout in the left navigation panel.

Companies

How do I switch to another company?

File ▸ Open Company…, then click the company. SeroBooks signs you out of this one and into that one. See Open Company.

The company I want is not in the Open Company list

A company appears on the list after you have signed in to it on this computer, or when it is registered to your own email address. Click Sign in to another company… and sign in with the login that company gave you.

It asks for the password every time I switch

SeroBooks remembers a company's password only if Remember me was ticked the last time you signed in to that company on this computer. Tick it at your next sign-in.

How do I know which company I am in?

The company's name is printed on its reports and forms, and File ▸ Open Company marks it Open now. An accountant working in a client's books sees a banner across the top: "You are working in client's books. Everything you save belongs to them."

Can two people work in the same company at the same time?

Yes. Everyone who signs in to the company works in the same books at the same time, each under their own username. What one person saves is there for the others when their screen refreshes (F5).

Can I use SeroBooks on more than one computer?

Yes. Install it on each computer and sign in. Your books are on the SeroBooks server, so they are the same on every computer. Settings that describe the computer itself — printers, window layout, Favorites, zoom — are kept separately on each one.
