Answers to common questions about installing and updating SeroBooks. The full steps are in Install SeroBooks and keep it up to date.
Installing
Where do I download SeroBooks?
From https://seropos.app/public/SeroBooks.msix. Open the downloaded file and click Install in Windows' App Installer.
Nothing happens when I open SeroBooks.msix, or Windows asks which app to open it with
Windows needs App Installer to install .msix packages. It comes with current versions of Windows 10 and 11; if it has been removed, install App Installer from the Microsoft Store, then open the file again.
Windows says it cannot verify the publisher, or will not install the package
The SeroBooks package is signed. A warning usually means the file did not download completely. Delete it, download it again, and open the new copy. If Windows still refuses, your organisation may block installing apps from outside the Microsoft Store; ask whoever manages your computers.
Do I need to install anything else?
No. Everything SeroBooks needs is inside the package.
I have a new computer. How do I move SeroBooks to it?
Install SeroBooks on the new computer and sign in. Your books are on the SeroBooks server, so there is nothing to copy. The first sign-in downloads your lists, which takes a few minutes. Printers, Favorites and window positions belong to each computer, so set those up again. See Where your data lives and how it syncs.
Updating
How do I know a new version is out?
When SeroBooks finds one (it checks when it starts and every hour), it shows a SeroBooks version is ready window once, and a green Update to *version* button stays in the dark bar at the top until you update. Help ▸ Check for Updates… checks straight away.
The update button is red and says "Update required"
That update fixes something that should not wait. Save your work and click it as soon as you can.
Will updating lose my work or my data?
No. Your books are on the server and are not touched. Settings on this computer are kept. The only thing at risk is a form you have not saved, and SeroBooks asks about that first: "Updating closes SeroBooks. Save what you are working on first, or discard it and update now."
I clicked Update now and App Installer opened. What now?
Click Update in App Installer. SeroBooks closes, installs the new version and opens again by itself.
"The download stopped part way. Try again."
The connection dropped. Nothing was installed and the partial download was removed. Click Update now again.
"Windows could not open the installer. It is saved at …"
The new version downloaded, but Windows did not open it. Open File Explorer, go to the folder named in the message (usually .serobooks-updates in your Windows user folder; type %USERPROFILE%\.serobooks-updates in the address bar, since the folder is hidden), open SeroBooks-version.msix and click Update.
"The update could not be downloaded"
The server could not be reached, or sent an error. Check your connection and try again in a few minutes.
Check for Updates says "This copy updates from seropos.app/public/SeroBooks.msix…"
This copy of SeroBooks cannot update itself, because it was not installed from the Windows package. Install the package as described above.
Which version do I have?
Open the left navigation panel (☰ in the dark bar): the version is shown at the top as Version: *number*. Help ▸ Check for Updates… also tells you ("You have version, the latest version.").
Can I stay on an older version?
You can click Later and keep working, but the update button stays until you update. Keep SeroBooks up to date: updates carry fixes, and an older version may not match what the server expects.
