Canadian sales tax calculator

The whole country in one calculator: GST, HST, PST, RST and QST combined correctly per province, shown as components the way your receipt should show them.

HST (13%)$13.00
Total tax$13.00
Total with tax$113.00

Standard rates for general goods; category exceptions (groceries, children's clothing, liquor…) differ by province. Rates as published — verify before filing.

Why one calculator needs thirteen answers

Canada runs four different sales-tax arrangements at once: the federal tax alone, harmonized single rates, the federal tax alongside a separate provincial tax, and Quebec's provincially administered system. A single national rate does not exist, which is why choosing the province is the first input rather than a detail.

Where a province charges its own tax separately, the two do not always share a base — an item can be treated differently by each — so the combined percentage is a convenience for the customer rather than a single tax.

The rate follows the buyer

Place-of-supply rules generally mean a sale carries the destination province's rate. A business in one province shipping to another charges the customer's rate, not its own — get this backwards and you either under-collect and owe the difference yourself, or over-charge customers.

Marketplace sellers feel this hardest, because their customers are everywhere and the shipping province arrives as data rather than as a conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Why show components separately?

Because they are different taxes with different filings. BC's 12% is GST 5 + PST 7, remitted to two different governments — software that lumps them cannot file them.
