GIFI codes, explained once and for all

GIFI is the CRA's universal chart of accounts: four-digit codes that let their systems read every corporation's statements the same way. Your accountant maps your chart to it every year — unless the mapping lives in the books.

How the codes work

Ranges by statement area — assets in the 1000s–2599, liabilities 2600s–3499, equity 3500s, revenue 8000s, expenses 8300s–9368 and so on. Each of your accounts maps to exactly one code; totals must still balance.

Why it becomes painful

Charts drift: new accounts appear all year, and in March someone reverse-engineers what each one is. The fix is mapping at creation — thirty seconds now versus an hour in tax season.

The SeroBooks approach

Codes are suggested per account, bulk-accepted for the obvious, overridden where judgment differs, and prompted for on anything new. The T2 schedule stops being prepared and starts being reviewed.

A translation layer, not a second chart

GIFI codes exist so the CRA can read every corporation's accounts in one vocabulary. They are a mapping applied to the chart you already keep, not a second set of books to maintain — and treating them as a year-end transcription exercise is what makes them feel painful.

Mapped once on the chart, they stay mapped, and each year's schedule is a read.

Never file a guessed code

Suggested codes derived from an account's type and name are advice, and good advice most of the time. They are not filings. A code nobody assigned, filed to the CRA, is exactly the kind of small inaccuracy that becomes an expensive conversation.

Accept the routine ones in bulk, then let a human make the handful of judgment calls.

What SeroBooks does with this

The T2 / GIFI screen lists every account with its assigned code or a suggestion, showing what the CRA calls it and whether the suggestion came from the sub-type or the account name. Accept-all handles the routine majority; only codes you assign are ever exported.

Once mapped, each year's schedule is produced from the chart as it stands rather than transcribed again, which is what turns GIFI from an annual chore into a stored decision.
