What is revenue?

Income earned from selling goods and services, before any costs — the top line. Revenue is recognized when earned (accrual), which is why an unpaid invoice is still revenue and a deposit for future work is not, yet.

Example

Sixty-five invoices in a month totalling $166,699.92 of sales is your revenue for the period, before any cost is deducted.

Revenue is not cash: an invoice on 30-day terms is revenue today and cash next month.
