What is journal entry?

A manual posting straight to ledger accounts, balancing debits and credits — the tool for the things documents do not cover: accruals, corrections, depreciation, year-end adjustments. Powerful, so kept controlled and audited.

Example

Auto-posted from sale 0173: debit accounts receivable $7,993.05, credit sales and the tax payable accounts for the same total.

Every journal balances on its own, not merely in aggregate — an entry that balances only across the ledger is a bug.
